Ayurvedic Fat Fighting Tea

Boil 4-5 cups of water in the morning.

Add ½ tsp of the following seeds to the water and continue to let steep for at least ten minutes with the lid on.

  • Whole cumin seeds
  • Whole coriander seeds
  • Whole fennel seeds

Strain out the seeds and pour the liquid into a thermos.  Sip the liquid throughout the day.  Start fresh with a new batch of tea each morning.

If the tea is too strong or if you experience some initial discomfort, reduce the amount of the seeds to ¼ tsp for two weeks and then increase it back to ½ tsp.

The tea is actually ideal for when you are trying to conceive and during pregnancy. It also helps to produce breast milk while you are breast feeding. Generally, I tell my patients to come off all herbal supplements when they are trying to conceive or when they are pregnant. This is not just for triphala, but for all natural supplements. Good luck with your conception! Dr. KC

No need to boil on low just put the seeds in after water has reached boiling and steep for 10 minutes.

Yes, this tea is perfectly safe in hypothyroidism and with the concomitant use of cytomel and statins. Our Endocrinologist, who sees a large number of hypothyroid patients uses it regularly. Keep in mind—all of the ingredients in the tea are foods that you can cook with on a daily basis.

    Reply
    • Wellspring Health says:

Yes, we use both of these in our clinic for the treatment of ulcerative colitis, but we usually start with a more dilute recipe of the tea (1/4 tsp of each seed) and only one tablet of triphala. Then we gradually increase the dose. The reason for this is that ulcerative colitis is usually associated with a lot of digestive toxins and you don’t want to detox too quickly.

When detoxing things can get uncomfortable, headaches, diahrrea, and you may experience some emotional distress, etc. In your case the gurgling sound just means that things are moving around. What I suggest is that you dilute the tea with water a bit more.

    Hi Dr. Chaudhary,

I found a recording of the Dr. Oz show with you as a guest and I was really impressed. I have been taking an assortment of Ayurvedic herbs over the years and have had good success with them. I use to suffer from anxiety/panic attacks that ruled my life, but not now. I take Ashwagandha in the morning and evening and have had no attacks in four years. I also take a formula called Liv 52 from Himalayan herbs as a general tonic and detox on a daily basis. I also take Tryptophan at night as a sleep aid.

Do you think the tea or the Triphala would be a good idea in light of what I take now? If it is okay, then would drinking 3 or 4 cups per day be a good idea? I look forward to hearing from you. My hematologist at VA, Dr. Vishnu, is from India and I have an appointment with her in January and I can’t wait to share this information with her (she is one of my favorite Dr.’s and people).

I would think it would be beneficial to find out if the tea is what really helped in the process of the sore drying. Is there any way one could do that?

Based on your symptoms the herbs that most likely will help are Digest Tone and Herbal Di-gest. The Digest Tone will help with proper elimination and absorption of nutrients, and the Herbal Di-gest will help with the sluggish digestion. Don’t take Herbal Di-gest if you get frequent heartburn; in that case, Acibalance would be ok to take.

An Ayurvedic herb that can help with the thyroid is Ashawagandha. However, I’m not sure how familiar your doctor will be with it. It also helps balance male and female hormone levels.

The tea doesn’t have any caffeine in it. Try decreasing the ingredients by 1/2 and see if that helps. It may be that your body is detoxing too quickly. Once you tolerate the lower dose, you can slowly increase it back up to full strength.

Both nights, I had trouble sleeping, felt terrible, and had an elevated heart rate (Fitbit measures sleeping heart rate.) I also drink red wine every night. Is the tea incompatible with wine? I take a probiotic too. Thanks

    • Sandeep Chaudhary says:

      Hi Sheri,
Sorry about the delay in getting back to you.

This is probably a sign that the amount of wine is producing toxicity in your body and as your body begins to detox, it will become more obvious. I would recommend making the tea more dilute and only taking it 2-3 days a week and simultaneously reduce your wine intake. This is the beginning of a better communication between your mind and body, but you needs to go a little slower until your habits associated with alcohol consumption change so the detox symptoms are not as severe.

Also you should not mix the seeds with Chai tea. If you wants Chai tea, then you should take it separately from the cumin, coriander, and fennel tea.

Finally see your Primary Doctor if these symptoms persist.

      Sincerely,
      Dr. KC
